Kanojo, Okarishimasu/ Rent a Girlfriend

Synopsis

Dumped by his girlfriend, emotionally shattered college student Kazuya Kinoshita attempts to appease his void through a rental girlfriend from mobile app. At first, Chizuru Mizuhara seems to be the perfect girl with great looks and a cute, caring personality.

Upon seeing mixed opinions on her profile after their first date, and still tormented by his previous relationship. Kazuya believes that Chizuru is just playing around with the hearts of men and leaves her a negative rating. Angry at her client’s disrespect towards her, Chizuru reveals her true nature: sassy and temperamental, the complete opposite of Kazuya’s first impression. At that moment, Kazuya receives news of his grandmother’s collapse and is forced to bring Chizuru along with him to the hospital.

Although it turns out to be nothing serious, his grandmother is ecstatic that Kazuya has finally found a serious girlfriend! Which had always been her wish. Unable to tell her the truth, Kazuya and Chizuru are forced into a fake relationship—acting as if they are true lovers.

Review

Oh yes, we have all seen this type of anime. The MC is a chad all the girls flock to him. All the girls want to sleep with him and he just makes every girl he comes in touch with wet their panties. That is a generic Main Character who somehow remains oblivious of the harem he is collecting. That is typical self-insert harem Protagonist, all the girls love him and he is just some perfect person who does no wrong. This is not one of those anime, the main character has a weak-will, a crybaby some call him a Simp. He is the total opposite of a typical harem Main character. Where they are usually stoic with the self-control of a monk even with a harem of girls wanting his dick, unlike the protagonist here.

Character development

He is a guy who would be horny on main. I mean he is so ready to go at any time that he gets off on hearing girl’s shower. Now you would say why the hell I would ever want to watch anime like this. Anime is escapism, I don’t want to watch such a wimpy ass protagonist who is a slob and sounds like an incel. Well, you watch it for the characters and his growth. The story is simple a loser guy who after getting dump gets desperate enough to rent a girlfriend and so shenanigans ensue.

It will make you laugh, give you feels and enough second embarrassment to last a lifetime. But still, you can’t stop watching. This would be like real life. We all know how we were as a college student we weren’t like a typical harem Main character. Instead, we were more like Kazuya the main character of Rent a Girlfriend. I’m not saying we were as degenerate as him. But we were a lot closer to him than the absolutely unrealistic renditions of average high school/college students in other anime.

Apart from being a more realistic representation of college characters non withstanding the absolutely bonkers situation they put in this anime also boasts a number of waifs to choose from. After all, how can we have an anime without having the best girl to fight over. If you are looking a new experience and an alternative to the typical harem anime this may be for you to watch. Apart from our main character we also have several other notable characters who serve the story very well. These characters give the world of rent a girlfriend a whole different view. And seeing the characters interact with each other makes a very memorable experience.

Animation quality

The overall animation style and music is solid not spectacular though the opening does deserve a special mention. Also this anime has some of the most creative use of the ending sequences so don’t miss out on those. The art style and character design is quite nice with each character having a distinct appearances. The character design of the main girls especially distinct and memorable with solid animation and background effects enhancing the overall anime experience.

The bottom line

Many of the viewers maybe turn off by the weak will and whining the main character of the show. However, this show is worth watching as the main character grows over the course of the anime. He is no perfect person and has flaws like any other real person, maybe flaws greater than most people. However, that’s what makes it enjoyable to watch him grow up and become a better person over the course of the anime. So Overall I’m not saying that rent a girlfriend is a masterpiece or anything. Yet it’s a solid anime that differs itself greatly from the typical harem anime shows. Sure they are some moments that are cringe that you may want to stop watching. In contrast it’s true to life to how a socially awkward college student may react to such situations.

Overall I would give this anime a 7.5/10. This is after the airing of the first eight episodes of the anime. So this rating may be subject to change as the anime continues to air. You can stream the anime on crunchyroll.com.
